Slather me Up with Sunscreen

Summer is coming up fast! Or if you live in Southern California, summer can come as a random day in January. You just never know here. That’s why sunscreen is one of my  favorite beauty products. Some people would say that sunscreen isn’t a beauty product, but to me, it helps keep me beautiful so I consider sunscreen an important stable in my beauty routine.

In my younger days (seems so long ago) ok like 10 years ago, I use to work at a tanning salon. I would go in tanning beds everyday! I loved being tan. It made me feel slimmer and made my skin look amazing. I started getting tattoos and tanning became harder because I had to cover my tattoos with sunscreen or a towel so they didn’t fade. I paid a lot for these tattoos so I didn’t want to ruin them.  I always had woman that were older tell me they wish they would have stayed out of the sun when they were younger cause they have so many wrinkles and sun spots now. I can’t believe they use to tan with vegetable oil! So crazy.

It finally clicked! I needed to stop tanning and be smarter about sun protection. Now I’m a little obsessive over protecting my skin from the sun. Sunscreen is important for EVERYONE. It doesn’t matter what age you are, your skin tone or gender. Everyone should be protecting themselves from harmful UV rays. Not only will you be avoiding an uncomfortable sunburn but you’ll be preventing sunspots, preventing wrinkles, and you’ll be fighting against skin cancer. Win win!

How I protect my skin goes beyond just putting sunscreen on everyday. When I drive, I always use put the visor down to block the sun from hitting my skin. The majority of my tattoos are on my left arm, so when I drive the sun hits that arm. I always have a long sleeve sweater in my car and I might look ridiculous but I wear one sleeve over my arm when I drive. I love to workout outside so I wear a hat to protect my face. I also try to buy the biggest sunglasses I can find with UV 400 or higher lenses so they protect a good majority of my face. I still like to lay out in the sun sometimes because it just feels good! But I have tons of sunscreen on.

I’ve gone through a lot of different sunscreens in my day. Finding ones for my body is easy, my face is another story. I have oily skin. A lot of sunscreens are horrible for my skin type.Through a lot of trial and era, I’m glad I found ones that work for my skin type. Here are some of my favorites.

For the Face:

Supergoop! Skin Soothing Mineral Sunscreen SPF 40– After I wash my face in the mornings I apply this product to my face before my moisturizer. It’s lightweight, hypoallergenic and great for sensitive skin. It also helps reduce the appearance of redness, irritation and inflammation because it’s developed with olive polyphenols that are rich in omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. It doesn’t leave a white cast on your skin and I almost feel like it acts as a primer that keeps my face looking more matte and not oily throughout the day. If you have oily skin, being matte is where it’s at ( I rhymed haha)

Supergoop! Defense Refresh Setting Mist SPF 50– This is such a unique product but something I can’t ever live without. It’s a three-in-one weightless product that sets your makeup, helps control oil and protects you from the suns UV rays. How great is that? The scent doesn’t smell like sunscreen at all! It has a light rosemary and mint scent. I love how it controls my oil and shine. I use this even if I’m not wearing makeup. If I’m feeling a little shiny, I’ll spray this on my face and my shine is gone! It’s a really amazing product for oily skin. When I spray it over a full face of makeup, it sprays out so nice and even. If you have oily skin and can’t find any sunscreen products that help you stay matte, try this out!! You won’t be disappointed.

Neutrogena Age Shield Face Oil-Free Lotion SPF 110– When I know I’m not going to wear makeup and I’m going to be at the pool or beach all day this is what I use. With an SPF of 110 this protects your face from the sun’s UV rays like a champ. The reason I don’t use it under makeup is because it does my my skin oily. I used this when I went to Cancun last year and my face never got red (and my skin is really pale).

For the Body:

Coola Sport Continuous Spray SPF 30– I love this sunscreen for my body. The spray reaches every spot on your body, even if the bottle is upside down. I love spray sunscreens because I can get my back without any help and they’re just easy to reapply. It’s made with 70% certified organic ingredients and is hydrating on your skin. They also come in different scents or unscented.

Target brand Up & Up Sport Sunscreen Spray SPF 30– For only $10 you get two bottles of this sunscreen. I keep one in my car and one right before my front door at my house. It’s easy for me to just spray this on really quick before leaving my house or when I’m in the car. I like these because they’re waterproof and doesn’t make my skin feel sticky or has that sunscreen film feeling. It’s unscented so it’s great for sensitive skin.

As much as I hate wearing sunscreen, it’s so necessary. I like the sounds of the Coola Sport one solely because I’m assuming it smells like coconut? I’m determined to buy a floppy hat for this summer, I think they’re so cute and helpful at the same time!

Yes, the Coola one does smell like coconuts. I feel like the spray sunscreens are easier than ones you have to rub in. Just spray and go. It’s so good for your skin. Something about smelling like sunscreen makes me feel like I’m on vacation too haha. I don’t know why. thanks for the comment Jenny

This is such a helpful post! I think that people forget how important sunscreen is. You can still be tan and wear sunscreen! I know my brother would always tell me he didn’t want to wear sunscreen because he wanted a tan, but he’s totally endangering himself in the process!
